Body Language Reveals What Someone Is Thinking
We have all been in a situation where we see someone crossing their arms, avoiding eye contact or fidgeting nervously. We instantly think they are lying or hiding something. We see body language as a way to figure out what people are thinking. We see it on OTT platforms, where a single gesture can reveal everything.
The truth is that body language does not work that way.
~The Illusion of Certainty
It is interesting to believe that the way people act can tell us what is going on inside their mind. All actions can speak louder than words, right?. Not always. A person who avoids eye contact might seem dishonest. But they could also be the following:
- Nervous
- Introverted
- From a culture where avoiding eye contact is a sign of respect
- Just distracted
Similarly, crossing arms might not mean someone is being defensive. It could just mean they are cold or comfortable. The same gesture can mean things. That is where the idea that body language can reveal everything starts to fall.
~Why Body Language Is Not a Lie Detector
Research in psychology shows that people's behaviour depends on the situation. That means gestures do not mean the thing in every situation. They depend on:
- The situation
- The person's personality
- Their background
- Their emotional state
Even experts have a time figuring out when someone is lying just by looking at their body language. There is no one sign that means someone is lying. So the idea that we can read minds by looking at someone's posture or expressions is not true.
~The Danger of Over-Interpreting
Believing in the idea that body language can reveal everything can actually cause problems. When we assume we know what someone is thinking based on their body language, we risk the following:
- Misjudging people
- Creating misunderstandings
- Reinforcing stereotypes
For example, labelling someone dishonest just because they are fidgety can damage trust even if they have done nothing.
~What Body Language Can Tell Us
This does not mean body language is useless. It just means it is not exact. Body language can:
- Give us hints about emotions
- Show how comfortable or uncomfortable someone is
- Support. Contradict what someone is saying
The key word here is hints, not conclusions. To understand someone, body language should be combined with:
- What they say
- The situation
- Listening carefully
The Skill: Understanding, Not Judging. Trying to figure out people like puzzles, a better approach is to:
- Ask questions
- Listen carefully
- Observe patterns over time
People's thoughts are complex. Too complex to be reduced to a gesture or expression. The idea that body language reveals what someone is thinking is appealing. It is not realistic. People are not books. Their movements are not subtitles to their thoughts. While body language can offer insights, it is far from a truth-teller.
~ Conclusion:
So the time you catch yourself analysing someone's every move, pause for a second. Understanding people is not about decoding signals. It is about connection, context and conversation.
